A Short History of the Fort Collins Girls Softball Club
The Fort Collins Girls Softball Club was formed in 1996 to provide an additional option for girls who wanted to play softball. This venture ended after the first year for two reasons. The first reason was a lack of teams to play against. The second reason was that we found our players were not prepared to compete with players from other clubs for spots on high school teams. The initial two teams that year of our humble beginnings were called the Fort Collins Explosion and Fort Collins Extreme.
The club switched to fast pitch softball in 1997 and the "Stars" were born. Since the switch to fast pitch, the Stars have grown from the initial 24 girls to well over 300 girls today. We offer teams of all levels of skill, in age groups from 8 and under to 18 and under. For our 8 and under division we started a league in Fort Collins to eliminate travel. In the 10, 12, 14 and 18 and under divisions we offer both recreational and competitive leagues. All that has happened in the last seven years would not have been possible if not for one man in particular, Fred Flores. His tireless dedication and work have helped make the STARS organization the thriving and ever growing enterprise that it is today. Fred served as the president of the club for several years and just this year has relinquished the leading role to Joe Hehn. We are pleased that he is still on the Board of Directors so that we may still have access to his immense knowledge of the club, coaching and softball. Fred is also the creator of the Northern Colorado League for competitive teams and serves on the State Board of Softball Coaches. He has also chosen to continue coaching the 18 B team. Thanks Fred for everything!
